CHAPTER TEN
Ophelos
"Agreed."
With that single word, I felt like we had settled so much. Peace enveloped me as we stared at each other, and I could breathe again. My whole form relaxed on a deep breath as I stared into pale blue pools, waters I would happily be lost in.
Scylla wasn't going to get rid of me! The thought made me giddy and the corners of my mouth curled into a wide grin as I relaxed. I hadnât realized how much I wanted to stay until I saw that sea bird fly away. I didnât want freedom from Scylla, from the cave. I just wanted to be wanted here, and I was. She didnât think me disposable. She had been trying to protect me, instead of throwing me out, as I had originally thought.
So much had changed in just the past few days for us to get here, and yet here we were. We had gone from an intense, carnal encounter toâ¦another intense, carnal encounter of a very, very different kindâI shuddered at the memoryâto confusion and pain, to her telling me I was leaving, to this.
The whirlwind of changes was a battering storm at sea. When a storm hits, the kind that makes you question your choice to be on the water in the first place, the kind that has you throwing your prayers to Poseidon, there's confusion and turmoil as you battle the elements. Sometimes you barely know which direction is up throughout it, the waves knocking you about as you pray to the gods youâre not lost to the water, but after? After, there's an odd peace to it. You and the crew acknowledge your losses, taking note of any missing cargo or people. There are nods of acknowledgement, a hand clasping your shoulder as if to commend you, silently, because you survived. You acknowledge the damage, the broken oars and splintered wood. You acknowledge it all, you breathe it, feel it, know it, and then you set out to make it right. Together.
You see things differently in the quiet after the storm as you gather and repair. Scylla and I were repairing our proverbial vessel, and I was starting to realize how much more we were building.
Last night I had been so terrified, so hurt and confused. I had opened myself so easily, so intimately, and it had gone terribly. I had had to face the very real truth of Scylla; she was capable of hurting me, both physically and emotionally. The jarring admittance after an experience so preciously intimate had left me reeling on a raging sea of my own emotions and I had behaved poorly. In the maelstrom of those feelings, of feeling like I had made a mistake and bared myself too soon, too fully, too foolishly, I had ended up making a mistake. A mistake that hurt her in kind.
When I was honest with myself in the light of day, Scylla attacking ships didn't truly bother me that deeply. Her acts of vengeance were not the source of my pain and confusion, but her perceived rejection was.
